Lalibela - Ethiopia
The Coptic Christian students in Lalibela, Ethiopia, are called debteras. These debteras are religious students and scholars, often linked to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. They train in a mix of disciplines like liturgy, theology, sacred music, and even traditional medicine.
These students live in super basic conditions—a small hut, a blanket thrown on the dirt floor, and their only real treasures are the Bible and sacred texts they study together. I stumbled across their camp by chance while walking around the outskirts of town. When I saw this young guy sitting like that, I couldn’t help but see hints of contemporary fashion… honestly, he could’ve thrown on a Chanel bag over his head and looked like he was posing for an ad, right?
